
What is a background check?
A background check is an examination of an individual’s history to verify the individual’s identity. Background checks can encompass various aspects of an individual’s history including criminal records, credit history, driving records, employment history, residential history/rental history, and education history.
Fingerprinting is often a part of the background check process when requesting criminal history records. You will often hear the terms “police check,” ‘police certificate,” “background check, “rap sheet, “Identity History Summary Check,” “FBI report,” “Personal History Check,” “FBI report,” “State check,” “Criminal History Record Information.” People often use these terms are often used interchangeably when seeking state. federal and international criminal history records.
Who can request my records?
Individuals can request a copy of their personal history record from the FBI and in all 50 states-this will include non-conviction information. Employers and landlords often request background checks during the hiring, licensure, or application processing-these checks will typically include conviction information or public record information. Schools and foreign countries may request a background check as part of the visa application process.
Why should I check my own history record?
Most employers conduct a “background check” on employees and prospective hires. Reviewing your record and correcting any inaccurate information can be the deciding factor between hiring you or selecting another candidate.
